Marafiki Holidays is based in Watamu, Jacaranda, surrounded by Mijikenda and Swahili local communities. The Mijikenda Local Community is a Bantu tribe consisting of nine different dialects under one collective tribe hence the name “Mijikenda” – which means a collective of nine. They are well known for their fantastic hospitality and their ever-present smiles.
We also have Muslim societies in the area including Bajuun, Wagunya, and others. Most of the locals earn their living through activities such as fishing, mining, and small-scale farming such as coconuts, cassava, and maize.
Visit us and learn how to build a traditional house made from mud, soil, and makuti (coconut leaves).
We are connected to local women’s groups and assist them in business training equipping them with ideas and different skills on how to generate income and solve their challenges through entrepreneurship.
We also partner with local community-based organisations in Marine Conservation and organise monthly beach clean-ups and also host community workshops.
The women have traditional dance groups who will entertain you while on your local community visit. You can also taste typical Swahili dishes freshly made by the local community.
Book your trip to interact and learn more about the Mijikenda community!
