Kenya Honeymoon: How to Plan the Perfect Safari and Beach Trip

A Kenya honeymoon gives you two trips in one: the drama of a safari followed by slow days on the white beaches of the Indian Ocean. We have planned honeymoons, anniversaries and proposals on the Watamu coast for years. Here is how to put the perfect one together.
Why Kenya is ideal for a honeymoon
- Safari and beach in one trip: Tsavo East is close enough to the coast for an overnight safari, and the Masai Mara is a short flight away.
- Privacy: Watamu is quiet and unspoilt compared with larger resorts, with villas and small boutique stays.
- Warm all year: there is no bad month to travel, only different seasons.
- Unforgettable moments: sunset dhow cruises, dinners on the sand and sundowners in the bush.
How long should a Kenya honeymoon be?
Ten to fourteen nights is ideal. A popular plan is two or three nights on safari followed by seven to ten nights on the coast. If you only have a week, choose an overnight Tsavo safari and five nights in Watamu.
Three honeymoon plans that work
Relaxed: 10 nights
Fly into Malindi, spend two nights on a Tsavo East Safari, then eight nights in Watamu with a Blue Safari, a sundowner dhow cruise and plenty of time to do nothing at all.
Classic: 12 nights
Start with the Masai Mara Safari for the big cats, then fly to the coast for nine nights of beach, snorkelling and seafood dinners.
Island and beach: 10 nights
Combine Watamu with the old Swahili town of Lamu on our Lamu Island Escape, with dhow sailing, narrow streets and no cars.
Where to stay in Watamu as a couple
For space and privacy, Kijiwe Villas is a four-bedroom villa above the Indian Ocean, ideal if you want a private base, or for a group celebrating together. For barefoot simplicity, the Mawimbi and Mwamba beach rooms are a few steps from the sea and from our restaurant on Jacaranda beach. You can see all options on our stays page.
Romantic experiences couples love
- A sundowner dhow cruise on Mida Creek
- A private dinner on the beach with fresh seafood
- Snorkelling together in Watamu Marine National Park on a Blue Safari
- Sunset at Hell’s Kitchen, the red sandstone canyon at Marafa
- A bush breakfast or sundowner on safari
Tell us it is your honeymoon and we will add small surprises along the way. We can also help plan a proposal or a beach wedding blessing.
When to go
For guaranteed sunshine, aim for late June to October or mid-December to March. For quieter, greener and better value travel, consider June or November. Our month by month guide explains the seasons.
Frequently asked questions
Is Kenya safe for a honeymoon?
Millions of visitors travel to Kenya every year. As anywhere, use common sense, follow your guide’s advice and check your government’s travel advice before you go. Travelling with a local team who knows the area makes things simple.
Do we need a visa?
Most visitors need an electronic travel authorisation applied for online before travel. Check the official Kenyan government website for the current requirements for your passport.
How far ahead should we book?
Three to six months ahead is ideal, and earlier for July to October and the Christmas period.
