Tsavo East Safari from Watamu: Day Trip or Overnight? A Complete Guide

Tsavo East is the closest major national park to Watamu and Malindi, which makes it the most popular safari for anyone on a Kenya beach holiday. It is one of the largest parks in Africa, known for its red-dusted elephants, open plains and the Galana River. Here is how to choose the right Tsavo East safari from the coast.
How far is Tsavo East from Watamu?
The drive from Watamu to the park gate takes around two to three hours, depending on the road and the gate you enter. We pick you up from your hotel in Watamu, Malindi or nearby, usually early in the morning, so you are in the park while the animals are most active.
Day trip, overnight or three days?
One day: Tsavo East Day Safari
A long day with an early start, several hours of game drives and lunch in the park. It suits travellers with limited time who want to see elephants, giraffes and buffalo and still sleep in their beach hotel. See the Tsavo East Day Safari.
Two days, one night: more time, less driving
Staying overnight in a lodge or tented camp means you get the late afternoon drive and the early morning drive, the two best times to find lions and other predators. It is the option we recommend most for first-time visitors. See the Tsavo East Overnight Safari.
Three days and longer
With two nights you can explore further, visit Lugard Falls and Mudanda Rock, and add Tsavo West with its volcanic hills and Mzima Springs. See the Tsavo East Safari and the Tsavo East and West Safari.
What will you see in Tsavo East?
- Elephants: Tsavo’s elephants dust themselves in the red earth, which gives them their famous colour.
- Big cats: lions are seen regularly, and cheetahs hunt on the open plains. Leopards are shy but present.
- Plains game: giraffe, zebra, buffalo, impala, gerenuk, oryx and the large herds that follow the rains.
- Birds: over 500 species have been recorded across the Tsavo parks, from ostriches to kingfishers.
- Landscapes: the Galana River, Lugard Falls, the Yatta Plateau and Mudanda Rock.
Wildlife is wild, so no sighting is guaranteed. A good driver-guide makes the difference, and ours have been reading these plains for years.

Best time for a Tsavo East safari
Tsavo can be visited all year. The dry months, roughly June to October and January to March, are the easiest for game viewing because animals gather near water and the grass is short. The rains, usually April to May and again around November, turn the park green, bring baby animals and fewer vehicles. Read our month by month guide.
What to bring
- Neutral coloured clothes, a warm layer for early mornings and a hat
- Sun cream, sunglasses and insect repellent
- Binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens if you have one
- Your passport (it is checked at the park gate)

Frequently asked questions
Is a Tsavo East day trip worth it?
Yes, if time is short. You will see a lot in a day, but staying one night gives you the dawn and dusk drives, which are the best for predators.
Can children come on safari?
Yes. Families travel with us all the time. We plan shorter drives and rest stops for younger children.
Is Tsavo East or the Masai Mara better?
They are different. Tsavo East is close to the coast, wild and uncrowded. The Masai Mara has the highest density of predators and the Great Migration from about July to October, but it is further away. Many guests do Tsavo from the beach and add the Mara on a longer trip, such as our Masai Mara Safari.
